Fact or Fiction Storytelling event

for mature audiences

hosted by Charles Munroe-Kane (pictured right)

Do you have the skills to tell a great story? Maybe a true story so incredible that it defies belief. Or, a very convincing piece of fiction? The “Fact or Fiction?” live story-telling event kicks off the Central Wisconsin Book Festival. Submit 3 – 5 minute stories by September 15 to factorfiction@mcpl.us and your piece could be chosen to be read out loud at the event! The winner is the storyteller who tricks the most people in the audience. Everyone gets to enjoy telling and hearing the ripping yarns, both tall tales and honest truths.

Peabody Award winner for his work on the NPR program To the Best of Our Knowledge, Charles Munroe-Kane has lived all over the world and explored countless professions, providing him with an abundance of story material! His 2016 memoir, Lithium Jesus, gives his testimony of mental illness, drug abuse, faith and love.

Copies of Lithium Jesus will be available for purchase and signing.

University of Minnesota Graduate Art Student Katayoun Amjadi, October 2 - 20

Katayoun is an Iranian-born ceramicist and sculptor. She belongs to the generation of Iranian women who experienced a childhood of wartime and an adolescence of social and political turmoil under the post-revolutionary regime. Shortly after immigrating to the United States, she came to realize that what she had left behind was more than material belongings, friends, or family members. Rather, she found herself stripped away from the familiar cultural context that had once constructed her sense of Self. In her artworks, she often considers the social aspirations that continually construct binaries which shape our perceptions of Self and Other, such as religion, gender, politics and nationalist ideologies. While cherishing the idiosyncrasies of her cultural heritage, she tries to make sense of the emotional turmoil involved in reconstructing a new identity as an Iranian-American.

Katayoun will receive her Masters of Art in Sculpture and Ceramics in 2019 from the University of Minnesota.  She received her Bachelor of  Art in Architecture from Islamic Azad University of Tehran in Tehran, Iran in 2003 and her Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Minnesota in 2013.

Hollis Hammonds, November 6 - 9

Hollis Hammonds’ dystopian drawings and found-object installations have been widely exhibited throughout the US including such venues as Redux Contemporary Art Center, the Grace Museum, the Dishman Art Museum and Women and Their Work gallery. Built on threads of personal memory tied to the public collective consciousness, her work reflects the evidence of war, natural disasters, environmental degradation, and the ills of consumerism. Hammonds (pictured below) is an Associate Professor of Art and chair of the department of Visual Studies at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX.

Professor Hammonds will work with UWMC drawing and painting students throughout the week. Their work will complement her work-in-progress in the gallery throughout the week and will be on display as well.
